Corrosion research group

Main Interests

The working group Corrosion is on the one hand interested in the development of novel corrosion protective coatings. For this purpose several nanotechnological approaches are followed. In this frame the following main topics are considered:

• Nanoparticle-based protective coatings

• Modification of anodized layers

• Corrosion protection by self-assembling monolayers

• Corrosion protection by biopolymers

On the other hand the group is working in corrosion investigations for new materials (e.g. titanium alloys) or new technologies (e.g. friction stir welding) using also modern electrochemical methods, e.g. EC-AFM or Scanning Kelvin probe.

Furthermore the group is responsible for corrosion investigations, materials selection tasks and damage analysis in the frame of  industrial research.

  - stationary current-potential curves

  - rotating disc and ring-disc electrodes

• Scanning Kelvin probe / Kelvin probe force microscopy
  
• ex-situ methods
  - scanning electron microscopy with EDX-analysis
  - atomic absorption spectroscopy
  - ion chromatography
  - gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry GC-MS
  - FT-IR-spectroscopy
  - contact angle measurement
  - adhesion testing
  - particle size analysis and zetapotential measurement
  
• Electrochemical Atomic Force Microscopy
