Alloys of the elements aluminum and titanium containing an Al-amount of about 50at.%, so called γ-titanium aluminides, are potential candidates for several high temperature applications in e.g. aero engines, automotive engines or land based gas turbines. γ-TiAl has a very good high temperature strength and the specific weight is only half of that of the normally used high temperature steels. This latter aspect is getting more important because of ecologic reasons. The use of TiAl-alloys is limited to about 750°C because of their poor oxidation resistance even though their mechanical properties would allow higher temperatures. The ion implantation of halogens improves the oxidation resistance of TiAl-alloys drastically (so called halogen effect).
